Hulton Park to be converted into potential Ryder Cup venue

Interesting news earlier this month, that the British Government had approved ambitious plans to convert a sprawling Bolton estate into a potential Ryder Cup venue.

The facility known as Hulton Park in Greater Manchester, has a dynasty stretching over 700 years and shall be “restored through the creation of an iconic new sporting venue and mixed community.”

Central to developers plans for the property is an “international championship-grade” golf course to be designed by European Golf Design for the purpose of hosting major events like the Ryder Cup. There is apparently space at Hulton Park to accommodate 70,000 spectators, which seems a large number for an event with fewer than 25 golfers to follow.

Along with the main 18-hole layout, the development will include a golf academy with a putting green and an adventure golf course, as well as a large clubhouse and luxury hotel with spa and conference facilities.

To help pay for the cost of building such an ambitious tourist facility, the project also includes a new residential community with ‘high-quality’ housing, school, retail and health facilities.

The social and economic benefits for the area are said to be ‘significant’ – as great at £1.2bn if hosting a Ryder Cup is factored into the calculations. Developers Peel L&P hope to have the golf course finished by 2025, and their approvals are believed to be subject to a restriction regarding Ryder Cup approval.
